*************TYPHOON or SUPERBOWL DMXCCVLX?
....Is the Great Red Spot of Jupiter a giant cyclone? This has been the accepted theory in books like the giant bestseller "Cosmos". My belief is that the spot may be evidence that it was dug out by a comet or other giant impactor that smashed in the the side of Jupiter, this would have dug in the slush below the vapor at the highest of Jupiters atmosphere and solidified, also floating around in the slush.

The permanent storm theory has the the disadvantage of impermanence. All such storms on earth are always just a few weeks and then dissipate. With the much higher wind speed of Jupiter, a permanent cyclone would rapidly disperse. Any permanent feature would imply a definite at least semisolid surface because if it were all fluid it would flow around and smooth out all the features.

It's been believed the Spot is a storm because they see the atmosphere rotates inside the hollow as the whole body moves with respect to the slush below, this would be
the rotation of the atmosphere as it would swirl in the hollow of the more solid construction of the Spot which would be more permanent. If so the more unusual noncyclonic shape of the outer walls of the Spot seen in the zooms wouldn't rotate, just the clouds inside. The general motion around of the spot relative to the planet in a hundred year period in forward or retrograde motion, would be by the solid mass in flotation and moving East or West with the atmosphere swirling around in it continuously.

The impact explanation if so has several advantages. The red hue of the spot would be explained by the impact of a meteor, most iron or methane rich. Just one spot instead of many like on Earth would not be like a cyclone. An impact with a more massive comet or asteroid would be rare. Even so cyclones of more common cause would be usual on a giant world, and would explain the usual small whorls seen by Voyager and other sensors.

The dugout shape of the inside of the Spot would be because of its history via impact (this would be improbable with a typhoon which has a definite eye). And when you see the edge of the spot from a distance it has a definite raised edge. This would be explained by the edge of the bowl being somewhat sawed off at the heights by the level level of high upper level winds. Outside raised borders are not seen in tropical storms. The spot may not have eroded more than this because of the compounds formed by the impact.

This theory may be of import because of the 11 year sunspot cycle; this is almost the period of Jupiter's orbit. The sun would radiate heat, power, and goodwill,  this would fire up Jupiter's field which would boost the solar power more, and this would repeat. (It wouldn't fire up indefinitely because mostly it would be powered by Jupiter's field and this is limited although much more in power than the solar field, the sun has .5 gauss while Jupiter 100 Gauss.)
.
..The period of the sunspots overall is a twenty two year cycle from heat into light. If the sun heats up Jupiter and it heats up the sun in continous power and if the field of Jupiter was damped by an interruption of the field lines this could be an explanation of all or most of the glacial periods of the history of the earth and may make it so we can control the weather long term (see below).

About ice ages a spot producing comet or meteor would slosh into Jupiter. This would interrupt the field lines of Jupiter thus generally cooling the sun and the sunspot cycle would be caused by this, modulated by the strong influence of Jupiter's moon Io which explain why the total sunspot cycle is 22 years with a second cut off in the number of spots being caused by the eclipse of Io around Jupiter. Io has strong sulphur volcanoes with a torus of sulphur around Jupiter and the sulphur would be in strong resonance with the radiation both from the sun and Jupiter. (A prediction of the damping by the field is that the magnetic field of the Great Spot is considerably unlike the field of Jupiter itself and as it interacts and erodes with Jupiter's atmosphere it would leak out this type of magnetic damping of the stuff of the Spot, as of 2008 I've been unable to find any research about measurements of the spot's magnetic signature.)

The ice ages are found to be in sets of 25,000 years. The westward spin of the Earth is also known to have a slow westward motion of this period. The ice ages are 100,000, 100,000, an 100,000 years and a 75,000 year period. The interglacial ages are 200,000, 275,000, and 75,000 years, all multiples of 25,000.

Jupiter's heat is known to be powered from inside pressure (it radiates out more heat than in) so if a spot is on the side it would be eroded and bubbled away by millions of years of heat.

This would explain why the earth is not eternally in and out of ice ages polar wandering would cause. And about what started the orbital changes associated with the Milankovitch events we aren't told. If nothing giant smashed in the Earth 1 million years ago it seems the orbital loops would have been there all the time from the dinosaur extinction, and the cooling of the sun by way of the Spot events of Jupiter would have amplified the Events of the ice ages. Milankovitch loops are seen in fossils for millions of years and most of the time are present with no ice ages so it seems to have only modulated the ice ages and not the cause.

So instead of something having hit the Earth which we can't find evidence for, something may have hit Jupiter which may be easy to prove.. the evidence here may be involved with debris in the satellites stratigraphy of Jupiter from the impact and probably all around the solar system as well that we could find.

I believe the Milankovitch hundred thousand year cycles may only moderate the general heating and cooling of the sun which is generally caused by impactors perhaps hitting Jupiter.

There's something else that may be moderating the weather also and that's dust. If you look at pictures of development from orbit at night the eastern coast of the United States is the most brightly lit up area anywhere in the world. This is also where a lot of industrial dust is created by fossil fuels so I believe that the dust is sticky and heavy and also holds a lot of moisture and this drags down the jet stream for the east coast which then also changes its oscillation all around the world.

It may seem since the eastern seaboard of the United States is also the coolest area in the world relative to how warm it was before that, we couldn't yet explain the heat waves that we also have here on the east coast after the change in the weather started to take place. My explanation for this is, elsewhere like in China, there's also quite a lot of dust created by business and travel and so this may often overpower the flow of the upper atmosphere winds. So how we treat the atmosphere here can influence elsewhere and vice versa. The good news about this might be that we could reduce use of machines other than electric powered perhaps by fusion and this may help the weather improve.

So my belief is that the change in the weather we've seen as with unusual cloud formations with dust are caused by something outside of our influence but also by the Milankovitch astronomical cycles with the good measure of our own modulation of the weather by way of  pollution.

Astronomers may have been seeing the last melting away of the Great  Red Spot on Jupiter as it's gotten 37% smaller in the last 35 years or so. This would also be why the last age was only 75,000 years instead of more like a hundred thousand or even more for the other ice ages.

There were no prehistoric SUVs causing global warming at the end of the last Ice Age. I tend to believe there's nothing to panic about the weather changes because in the inter ice ages there were hippopotamuses as far north as England and while reindeers were as far S in the glacial ages as Spain, I can't help but irregardless ignore the period of more than 64 million years where the globe was much warmer after the birds and mammals began their rise and for them global warming was no problem.

Perhaps warmth was more common than the ice age which only lasted a million years and so now we have of a lot of the wildlife not feeling stressed by the global warming. Instead they're simply moving north and having more comfort where they like and adapting.. if greenhouse gases were causing global warming we would expect they wouldn't transmit heat so if you go to the city where there's more pollution like those your FM radio would not work as well. Or play as well!

The ice ages first would have to have the rare event of the damped solar wind by the impactor method as above. And then in this general area the earth with reduced heat would sometimes be in the realm of its orbit to be enough by the assymetry of the winters mild and the summers mild. If the north was far from the sun in summer in its orbit, and tilted toward it yet near at winter with the the same tilt relative to the stars in our own age, with cool solar heat, the summers would be mild even with the earth tilted toward the sun and near it in summer with the summer and winters when the earth was on the other side of the 25,000 years. Then with the ice formed, just as with a gyro with more weight above, the Earth would tilt more and spin much slower in precession, and the earth's pole would have spun slower. This would explain why the ice ages were in multiples of 25,000 years. The precession was in a slow mode, but it was in a resonance of the 25,000 years. When the ice age was over the moon would level the earth up and the usual 25,000 year cycle would resume. The ice ages were caused by precession and other motions of the earth relative to the stars by Milankovitch's belief.

If the earth was continually precessing around in 25,000 or so year cycles like this the N hemisphere would always be in and out of the solar radiation. A prediction of the Milankovitch cause is of subcycles in the ice ages in the ice and other ways that wouldn't be of just 25,000 years within the more mammoth cycles caused by changes in the Earth's orbit of 100,000 (or other) years. My way of explaining the ice age events which I name Solar Planetary Weather (SPW) with the one main precession of 100,000 years or other 25,000 year multiples away from the sun in the N hemisphere holds no sub motions of the ice since the mechanism that would make the ice in 25,000 year cycles would be the resonance with its strong correlation to the 25,000 periods and it would be constant in duration with each ice age multiple, while smaller resonances are possible, the main one would be about the 25,000 year cycle.
-
There was no appreciable ice age in the S Hemisphere. Before about 170,000 years ago.. Encyclopedia Americana holds antartica was a temperate forest. The antartic would be mostly in the radiance of slow precession. Instead of being the most elevated land down under in heat antarctica would have been temperate (even while the solar heat because of Jupiter's modulation of the weather was also cool) so would level the heat.

One of the most important findings about the ice ages was that the N hemisphere was more influential about the ice ages than the rest of the world.

If The Red Spot is the cause of long term changes in the Earth's weather the use of the Red Spot may have value for a method of long range weather control, moving an asteroid to modulate Jupiter's damping may be of worth. If out weather is ice age bound, computerized excavations on the spot with robots or explosives or laser beams would fizz away the spot.

In hot weather if the Earth was warming too much we would move an asteroid of high magnetic field, this could be by way of use of a laser or other beam to first move a small asteroid, as the small asteroid moves past a more massive stone its gravity could be used to move the large massive asteroid to crash into Jupiter's surface. If a big enough asteroid wasn't available, use of the right sized laser might be best.

It's been known that using small lasers can move an asteroid by ablation..just a few small lasers from a central station can exert as much force to move the asteroid as a space shuttle exhaust.. Methods such as these could be used to perhaps change the surface of Jupiter if another ice age began.

Although by history it may not be much probable, there may be some risk of over or underheating of the earth by this method of just cancelling the Great Red Spot alone because of no way to say before the spot was burnt off just how much the field would be damped, so another also more reliable method may be by shields of the umbrella type between the solar heat and the earth.

The Red Spot damping would explain global warming because the sunspots on 2008 are known to be at an all time high. I first published this Jupiter impact explanation here on my site in '06. This was before they've found (in June 07) that Neptune and Mars have global warming (Accuweather.com) just when and how the earth heats, explained by the solar heating. This would be because the red spot would be melting away from the last ice age of 75,000 years, not of more duration like the other ice ages of the pleistocene, and would explain how the heat of the sun would be entering a general warmup but this would be of no more alarm than most of the of millions of years when the world was without much ice in earth history.

With more dust in the air from big business the heat would heat up except with reduced precipitation because weather such as rain would be slowed by no distinction of heat. In the few events when the heat of the air of our earth would build up enough to break through it would produce larger storms, this is known from insurance statistics.

Looking at a map of changes is the temperature of the world after climate change began, the SE United States has the most cooling. This would be because of the most dust from business and automobiles anywhere. If you look at a picture of the Earth the lights at night are more built up in the East US than anywhere and this would be because of more machines and more dust. The dust is sticky and heavy and this would bring down the jet stream here, and in my belief this in turn changes the jet stream all around the world changing the weather.

So though dust and astronomy are indeed important to modulation of weather, the most important influence may be by way of Jupiter.

As I mentioned above, the 22 year modulation of cycle may be caused by the satellite of Jupiter, Io. Io spews out huge clouds of sulphur around Jupiter when compressed by Jupiter and the other moon's tidal power flexes the Io with sulphur events on both sides. The heat of these sulphur compounds around Jupiter have the most heat of any mass in the solar system because the particles are heated by the solar wind and move so fast in so much unit area. Presumably the sulphur would have a N and S field as Io precesses in a 22 year cycle (like sunspots) fitting the resonance of Jupiter's orbit going from where the charge of the sunlight would would go with field, then against it.

This would explain why the sunspots reverse polarity with each cycle, and other conundrums, such as why the heat of the sum is hot on the inside then with more radius it becomes frostier (hope so if Earth is too hot!) then more hot more with more distance outward.

Heat  flows from hot to cold in most of physics..With the huge field of Jove the heat would be being absorbed out to the side with more heat by more power.

If you see the solar wind at low ebb of the sunspot cycle (not in the height of the solar cycle where the solar wind is so hot it radiates out all the way around) you see the solar wind is usually with more flow on one side than the other, this would be aimed toward the field of Jupiter.

The Jupiter Earth Weather Connection would also explain how a simple wheel of fire of old rhyme like the sun would have a complex 22 year cycle with a cut at the top of each alternating cycle (This would perhaps be explained by eclipses of the plane of Io's orbit with Jupiter.). And it explains why the sunspots are not in just multiples of 1 (they have twice this number!). N and a S of each spot on the solar surface would be because Jupiter's field may not be able to form lines that would power just one big N and S solar field.

The realms of the solar surface would be more optimal in size to resonate with Jupiter's field from the side more because Jupiter is at the side. Jupiter's heat is known to be powered more from inside pressure so a continous field is necessary to complete the solar loop, it wouldn't just stop at the sun. The influence of the sidewise outside field would also explain why you see the images of the solar storms and the flow of the helium is up and then it slowly drops down with many swirls, sometimes the storm snaps away from the sun other times it falls back to the surface of the sun. This would be by the influence of Jupiter being almost strong enough to pull the storm away from the surface, this may be of import to predict solar storms because they would be extracted from the solar field mostly toward Jupiter and mostly at the higher time of the sunspot cycle.

If we aren't between Jupiter and the sun, the storm might be of reduced probability to hit the earth. If Jupiter is the cause of the sunspot cycle another prediction of the sunspots being caused by Jupiter would be that there would be more sunspots during the cycle on the side nearer to Jupiter.
-
Jupiter's surface would be eroded and bubbled away by millions of years of heat so this would seem to predict that if the ice ages were in general in subgroups they would first be substantial and then smaller with the peaks of the ice ages within the general cooling powered by Jupiter if the Red Spot is the cause. The maps of the Permian and Verangian ice ages seem to show them low and then with a bit more height. So perhaps as the spot bubbles, if combining in with iron and other compounds that generate Jupiter's strong field lines it would increase in strength where the magnetism of the iron or other such compound was in the flow.
-
It's important to note that both the Varangian and Permian ice ages are in two even cycles for the Varangian and 5 even cycles for the Permian. The permain and the Verangian are seperated generally by 200 million years. The phases would all be explained by the precession of the earth being of other periods than now, the Permian cycles are about 10 million years, another falsifiable prediction.
-
Jupiter's influence of the sun may explain the famous problem of the missing solar neutrinos, the solar neutrinos seen by astronomers are reduced by about 1/3 more than in the atomic reactions in the lab. This would seem to be a conundrum because the same physics in the lab are assumed to be in the rest of the cosmos and the solar physics would be the same too. It's well established the general numbers of neutrinos wax and wane with the 11 year solar cycle, the outside magnetic field would achieve this by way of outer expansion lowering the pressure inside the sun.

Almost all the numbers in subatomic physics are either vast or approaching 0, so a round number of 1/3 would be suspicious and may have its cause in the more common physics of pressure. And since lots of neutrinos may be caused by this more general reaction in other stars, this may be of worth to cosmologists to help close the universe with more neutrinos and the 1/3 more mass they would contain.

Since the pressure would be lowered by gravity and the magnetic field both while Jupiter's magnetic field and the solar heat would be low there would perhaps be a regular change in the neutrinos associated with the changes in gravity caused by the changes of pressure, and this would also be seen when Saturn would align with the orbit of Jupiter if the real cause of the solar cycles is outside the sun (Saturn's mass is almost 100 and Jupiter's mass is about 300 earth masses).

With the large change in pressure, there is a large change in solar radiation not just caused by the outward flux in the magnetic field.

The change of the field would cause a proportional change in the solar fusion in order for the flow of neutrinos to be caused by pressure not a revision of all of subatomic physics, this would already have been seen in the lab with billions of subatomic events seen.

So In The Solar Planetary Weather (SPW) events we would see more solar radiation when the magnetic field is lower with more spherical pressure, or perhaps more pressure with the increased magnetic field, much like the satellites of Jupiter have tidal flexing when the other moons move by on both sides, causing heating and tectonics on these moons.
-
Another mystery the sunspot weather connection may explain is about the magnetic field of the earth. The field has reversed 100's of times in the history of the geology of the earth. No matter how strong Jupiter's field may be, Io would always be there to modulate it, and the precession of Io would cause reversal of the fields polarity. This would cause reversal of the field between the Sun and Jupiter, and often the Earth would be between the two, reversing the Earth's field.

Other explanations have been that the Earth is a double disk dynamo, you reverse the core and the poles reverse, the problem with this is that the earth itself hasn't reversed once, and no one knows how the core could be. Certainly the outside is much the same! Or the idea of chaos has been used to explain this geologic flop flip where the field just oscillates at random on it's own.

While chaos is a good way out of many problems like in physics, I think it fails here because much of the science of chaos needs an outside source of power to maintain the field (for instance with the atmospheric fluctuations, without solar heat, the air would cool down to a solid, and with no randomness there would be no chaos). No doubt the modulation the Earth's field by the solar field has a random element, it's not caused by randomness alone with lots of friction slowing the change of the Earth that would reduce this type of randomness of the Earth (although not that of Jupiter and Io).

More recently however I have realized that the core being found to have a giant canyon, largest in the solar system may have large currents of the outer fluid core influencing it to flip over. Even so I think the influence of the suns radiation may also be involved. The Earth going between the sun and Jupiter may flip the core more and sooner if the heat and magnetic field  from the outside wss changed between most of the 65 million year age after the dinosaur extinction and the ice age of just 1 million years ago.

A look at the sunspot cycles on a chart shows they go from small spots at both sides of the solar equator near the poles then larger spots at medium latitudes and then smaller again nearest the solar tropical belt, then the cycle repeats.

If the influence of Jupiter  and modulation by Io starts small with each loop of solar weather and then increases this would be explained by a maximum field influence at about 45 degrees on both sides, the field would be stronger here because Jupiter has two poles but they are to the side. First the field is weak and the sun keeps the angle high more of just an outward spherical radiation.

As the field would become more powerful it would reach its zenith with both the solar and the field of Jupiter combined at 45 degrees, this may allow both  the influence of the N and S zones of Jupiter and that they are to the side. First the field lines are loose and as they strengthen they are more of a line and not so round, so the total band moves closer and closer to the solar plane of spin, maximizes and then the solar field takes over. The maximazation would be explained by a general deep flow of the field into and out of the sun, this goes with the idea of the neutrinos caused by the changes of the cycle that could be caused by the changes in the pressure, the field is a deep mechanical change in the solar flow of the field.
-
.. This about Jupiter and the weather would explain why the earth is not eternally cycling in and out of ice ages if the combination of this with the cycles of polar wandering are so. Milankovitch saw the cause of the ice ages by the Earth but not the general periods of more duration of geologic time without ice between the ice ages that I think must be explained by nonperiodic events  and set the general stage such as PW. The big comets would hit Jupiter damping the field and cooling the heat the earth would recieve at random times in geologic history, taking sometimes millions of years to melt away. In these ages when the sun was cool, more ice would form at the N or S.

The moon would act as a sort of timer to precess the earth around in the 25,000 year cycle multiples. When the earth was all the way back around the other side towards the radiation for the N hemisphere, the ice would melt and the usual 25,ooo year cycles of precession would go.

While it's known the rising and falling of the angle of the Earth is not in cycles that go with the time of the ice ages, the multiples of 25,000 would perhaps be caused by inside tension of the field of the earth by way of the strain the ice would cause without the outside motion just as pushing on a wall causes a definite change in the force even with no general motion of the wall.

If there were no general change to set the stage the earth would always be in the ice or heat..

....
.........THE SPOT IN Hi RES..........
..
.. As I say on this page, I believe the Great Red Spot may actually have been caused by an ancient impactor forming a permanent crater that would float around in the slush. One problem with the common belief those like Sagan and the current concensus that GRS is a permanent hurricane is that observers over the years have noticed a hollow inside the general view of it with good viewing conditions. And hurricanes don't have an outside border, like the walls of a town, as you see in the pictures, but they have an eye with smoothed out swirls over time. Both the border and the nonconvex geometry are in favor of it being dug out by an impactor. Craters have structure like this and tropical storms don't.
.....
On this site, the author notes, "The years of observations, coupled with those from the other observatories, reveals how the storm is incredibly stable despite turbulence, upheavals and close encounters with other anticyclones that affect the edge of the storm system". Like no tropical storm known of the thousands on record, there are no permanent tropical storms on earth.
..
On this Wikipedia site about the atmosphere of Jupiter, "Great Red Spot", the author comments, that "While winds around the edge of the spot peak at about 120 m/s (432 km/h), currents inside it seem stagnant, with little inflow or outflow." Though this would be obvious if the structure was like a large bowl with the walls shielding the winds inside this wouldn't be common in a storm which has an increasing pressure gradient inward to the eye.
..
In the GRS storm explanation the central clockwise flow observed counter to the wider clockwise flow seen is caused by the same forces that cause hurricanes on earth, if it was caused by an ancient impact instead there might either be a thinner region at the base under the clockwise plume with the crater having been more like a large ring or cup with the base eroded away, or not having been formed by the impactor perhaps by incomplete conversion of the compounds of the impactor to make a complete crater complete with the bowl all the way down to the base. Thus the lower regions of the GRS might be much the same as the rest of Jupiter at that altitude beneath the higher atmosphere or generally more like the higher altitude winds that would be the source of the inflow of air from the outside over the walls. Because we know the general heat flow of Jupiter is more outward than in, with the first explanation, the impact basin without the base, the otherwise well insulated areas of the air of the lower altitude would flow from the foundation more than elsewhere because being a tropical storm, it would be more like a lava flow with a volcano than a tropical storm, although as you can see, to compare weather on other worlds to either is not completely simple because of much different chemistry, wind speed, and pressure. In truth this could be rather like a sort of air volcano because if it was lava it would have solidified and filled up the GRS ages ago and this seem plausable with the more dense air of Jupiter. So a better explanation may be that there is no deeper well to the interior; if we believe in the impactor and its result instead of the tropical storm explanation the forces involved to create the warmer inner plume may be mostly about air pressure. If the flow is generally right to left even if no eye is formed the spiraling flow formed by the flow of the air over the top of the wall to the right which would also slow down the air inside the crater to perhaps 300 mph from 400 reducing pressure. It takes some 100 hours for the air to traverse the spot so the forces may be so well balanced the central plume would not actually be moved off center much even if it's ultimate cause would be the general right to left flow. In this model it would be to the left to some degree depending on the general pressure of flow as it changes and with the amount of centrifugal force the general spin would make to stabilize it against the flow. The plume's heat would mostly be caused by the friction of the air moving over the wall to the right and with more stability inside the spot the heat may also seperate more from the cool where elsewhere in the air the turbulence wouln't cause this. The tropical storm explanation would seem to have much higher heat gradients of the plume if like the storms on earth, while the observed change as on this site is just three degrees. It's even possible there is mostly the cause by air friction and a thin base of the spot so more heat would rise up from the base in a hybrid crater/air volcano model. The problem would be there would be more heat than just three degrees so it would seem the base of the GRS might be a complete seal. This would allow it to be able to float and not otherwise sink and sail around in the slush as has been seen with it's motion both with and against the general flow relative to the rest of the air seen by observers in the last 150 years or so. This would allow it's theoretical density to be high for reduced erosion over geologic time.
..
..Tropical storms are a way of moving heat from the tropics to higher latitudes in a bubble with much of the heat flowing by implosion, so they have a smoother flow of pressure. In all the photographs if the GRS while I've seen in 20 to 30 years there was no eye in any of the pictures, a wall or border was visible in most. Here's a more recent picture with the border in the second image on the page. The author of the site is concerned with the heat and clockwise motion of the central zone, this is not unusual like a common cyclone on Earth at high and low altitude, no eye is there to see us! This would be because the air flows over the side like a bowl with water if you try it in the faucet and most of the bubbling and lower speed swirl keeps the eye from forming. If most of the flow is from one side into the bowl and over the other side with some change of phase with height in the center, the pressure may be to the side mostly so no eye might form by this and the smaller centrifugal force. Another possible cause of the central flow is a central peak like impacts sites on the moon and mars below and not yet seen at lower altitudes inside the spot. In the image there's a North and South band of airflow around "the central walls" not an inward spiral, there is some seen in the picture but this seems to just be around the wall, and the explanation here is if the wall is like a crater wall like other craters on the moon it would be like a round wall of mountains, so there would be spiralling in and the inward flow is through these higher mountain passes and broken up into smaller spirals we see as it flows in. The airflow at the higher and lower zones could be by the limit of pressure of the walls so the air just flows around above and below not in a spiral mostly. In many pictures there is a definite v shape to the left and right and this may be because the general wind flows both to the W and E above and below the spot so the v's outward on both sides might be caused by the outflow of liquid to convert to solid by change of phase, here too there are no storms on earth that have a v on both sides. The 400 MPH airflow of Jupiter has strong forces involved; to maintain a permanent storm against all the turbulence would take a strong storm with a definite eye, hurricanes are much less common in the solar system than impact sites, and none are permanent. In the first infrared image there is a hot region around the lower edge of the GRS and this could be because the wind is flowing both against the border of the crater and with it with strong heat, and the reason the border is hot is because of friction too as the air flows above. A low altitude region around the outer sides of the Great Spot, as in this image would be caused by how it would be worn by deeper atmosphere that's unable to go over the border of the amazing ancient impactor's website on another world. The high altitude lower density clouds would make it over to the inside, while the higher density clouds would be more able to wear away the spot on the side to the small degree they can (if a solid impact basin, not a cyclone) but with reduced pressure with higher altitude. The low altitude area seen around the sides to the deeper zone would agree with the idea of a solid spot with some of its structure caused by erosion. Cyclones on Earth have no outside lower density channels, they're powered by the inflow of heat in a continuous change from higher to lower pressure so there is no wall like that seen in the image on cyclones caused by atmospheric heat flow, but a rock or island above the water line of a stream may have this. The water can't go over the top so by the laws of fluid motion the higher pressure to the sides has faster flow of the fluid and it could perhaps dig in deeper around the sides as the bed of the stream wears away. Like a crater on Mars where there is often a cometlike (three sided, crater, side, side) plume formed by the silt trailing away from the structure to the side from the wind or water though on both sides because of opposite winds above and below and more to the left because the W wind is stronger due to rotational forces of Jupiter. There are often turbulences seen around the Great Spot but since no alluvial fan to the left (downstream of the flow of the atmosphere) in the pictures is usually seen there may be a more solid mostly permanent plume below the clouds we can't see, a definite possibility. These formations would imply that there isn't a great deal of erosion of the spot over just periods of years (even though changes in the Spot over geologic time may influence the magnetic field of the sun and the Earth's weather as I say above). If it's a permanent cyclone as Sagan believes, it would move around the planet much faster because of the 400 mile per hour winds. The low erosion would be explained by the spots constituent mass being more dense and solid than the rest of the surrounding flow, this would fit in the explanation that the Red Spot is of outside origin from mass that would have impacted Jupiter like a comet, as the theory predicts;

Here's an image of the plumes (on the left side of the Spot)

The higher altitude atmospheric plumes fit in with the idea of the spot more as a hollowed out solid structure with the air flowing over and around it because the side downwind to the left would have low pressure that would form the plumes on one side more than the other like a boats propeller with low pressure. A cyclone on the other hand is stable on all sides because it's held in one more round shape by the balance of the pressure so it wouldn't have the plumes. To maintain the round shape there would in general be more balanced pressure, it seems asymmetrical with pressure continually changing more on one side than the other, not in radial gradient like a hurricane. Solid mountains on earth have plumes on one side, found less commonly in storms. In most of the images like on the link below (see "Three Color Filter Image of Jupiter and Ganymede (P-20945C)") many plumes are to the N and away from the wind to the left of the spot but none below it, this would be because the tropical bands of Jupiter spin faster and so the change in pressure with the drop in pressure would be more to the N causing more of the plumes.
